WATH OPEN GARDENS 2017
A collection of beautiful Spring gardens at Wath (near Ripon) are opening together for the first time to raise money for the village's St Mary's Church.
Nine gardens will be opening on Saturday April 29th â" starting at 10.30am â" and ranging from compact cottage gardens to the walled gardens, pond and stream surrounding the 16th century Rectory. The Church itself will be open and decorated with flowers and there are also many wild spring flowers in the churchyard.
In addition, former Chelsea Flower Show medal winners Drointon Nurseries, which is just a mile outside Wath, is also holding an open day at the same time. Drointon Nurseries holds one of the largest collections of Primula auricula in the world which extends to well over 1,000 different cultivars. Visitors will not only be able to inspect the whole collection at close quarters but a large selection of cultivars will also be available to buy.
Pauline Aldous â" one of the organising committee â" said: "We have got some hidden treasures amongst the gardens at Wath and we felt it was high time that people should be able to see them. In many cases, through their own hard work, the owners have created beautiful gardens containing many interesting plants and features. Combining with Drointon Nurseries, which is internationally recognised for its auricula collection, enables us to offer visitors some real gardening treats."
In the morning, bacon rolls, coffee and tea will be available at the village's Samwaies Hall followed by lunch time sandwiches and cakes.
There will also be a plant stall in the village as well as a childrens' treasure hunt and bee keeping demonstrations. Entrance to the open gardens is £3.50 for adults and children are free â" entrance to Drointon Nurseries is free.
